Conductive Hearing Loss

This type of hearing loss happens when sounds are not properly transmitted through the outer ear canal to the eardrum and to the small bones of the middle ear, called ossicles. Typically, this results in a decrease in the volume of a sound, making it harder to hear softer sounds. This type of hearing loss can often be treated with medical or surgical interventions.

Examples of conditions that may cause conductive hearing loss include:

• Fluid in the middle ear from colds
• Allergies (serous otitis media)
• Poor eustachian tube function
• Ear infection (otitis media)
• Perforated eardrum
• Benign tumors
• Impacted earwax (cerumen)
• Infection in the ear canal (external otitis)
• Presence of a foreign body
• Absence or malformation of the outer ear, ear canal, or middle ear

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is a permanent condition caused by damage to the inner ear or nerve pathways to the brain. This type of hearing loss goes beyond diminished sound reception and can impact speech understanding. It can be linked to genetic syndromes, viruses, noise exposure, aging, and more. Mixed Hearing Loss
